Gnosis Chain Ethereum Transition: What Changes for Bridges

With a December 2026/January 2027 goal and an interim bridge, the Gnosis Chain Ethereum transition would replace Gnosis Chain’s standalone-L1 settlement with an Ethereum-settled EEZ rollup, but it has not taken place. GnosisDAO’s GIP-153, published July 22, 2026, is a guiding proposal: users don’t need to move funds today, while bridge-based apps should plan for a different route model.

Gnosis Chain Ethereum transition: what actually happened?

On July 22, Gnosis published GIP-153, seeking the DAO to agree to move Gnosis Chain from an independent Layer 1 to a ZK-proven Ethereum Economic Zone instance.

The proposal keeps users’ addresses, balances, contract state and xDAI gas token. It plans for genesis around December 2026 or January 2027, subject to the wider EEZ dependencies landing. This is not a final upgrade, and it does not currently require a wallet migration.

What does the proposal change for bridges?

The old model sees that Gnosis Chain and Ethereum are distinct networks linked through a bridge validator committee. Under the proposed model, Gnosis Chain would settle right to Ethereum, while the present bridge validator set would be shifted to run provers.

That ends the assumption that the current xDAI bridge is the permanent settlement path. The proposal says native L1 settlement would replace the xDAI bridge and the validator committee. At launch, composability would be in one direction; an intents-based bridge would handle the interim and support atomic bridging in both directions.

That distinction matters. A bridge transfers assets or messages between disconnected chains, and its security rests on its design and trust assumptions, as described in Ethereum’s bridge guide. If Gnosis becomes an Ethereum-settled zone, some future exchanges may become verified cross-chain calls instead of regular lock-and-mint transfers.

What should users and DeFi teams do now?

• Users: do not move funds solely because of GIP-153. It is a proposal, not a live migration.
• DeFi teams: audit hard-coded bridge addresses, chain assumptions, token wrappers and withdrawal logic before the target launch window.
• People bridging today: compare the route, destination network and token representation carefully. gnosis bridge is one available place to perform a Gnosis transfer while the existing architecture remains in use.

The practical change is timing: nothing breaks today, but applications built around the old validator-operated bridge should treat the proposed Ethereum settlement layer as an integration change, not a cosmetic upgrade.
